Spiritual Shiny Object Syndrome: Are You Truly Growing or Just Collecting Practices?

In today’s ever-expanding spiritual landscape, it seems like every other week there’s a brand-new practice, guru, or method promising to be the one that finally unlocks your highest self. One week, it’s breathwork. The next, it’s quantum jumping. Then, there’s a full moon ritual, followed by shadow work, past-life regressions, and whatever else the algorithm decides is the next must-try trend.

Sound familiar? Welcome to Spiritual Shiny Object Syndromethe tendency to hop from one spiritual practice to another without truly committing to any of them.

If you’ve ever found yourself collecting spiritual tools but not seeing real transformation, this one’s for you.

The Allure of the Next Spiritual Fix: A Personal Story

A few years ago, I was that person—always on the hunt for the next big spiritual practice. I had a bookshelf overflowing with self-help books, a closet full of crystals, and a schedule packed with moon rituals, reiki sessions, and tarot readings. But despite all of it, I still felt stuck.

I vividly remember one particular weekend when I spent hundreds on an online manifestation course. I dived straight in, convinced that this was the missing piece. For a week, I followed every ritual, wrote affirmations daily, and even tried scripting my dream life. But the moment I hit resistance—when things didn’t instantly change—I moved on to the next thing.

I wasn’t practicing spirituality; I was collecting it.

And that’s when I had to get radically honest with myself: Was I truly growing, or just distracting myself with the illusion of growth?

The real breakthrough came when I decided to stop seeking the next thing and instead commit to deep study. I chose meditation and shadow work as my core practices and gave myself six months to stick with them, no matter how uncomfortable it got. And here’s what happened: My manifestations started arriving faster than ever before.

By doing the deep work—confronting limiting beliefs, sitting in silence with my emotions, and integrating past wounds—I finally made space for real transformation.

Instead of chasing, I was attracting. Instead of constantly learning, I was embodying.

This shift changed everything for me, and now I see clearly how slowing down actually speeds up the manifestation process.

Why Do We Get Stuck in Spiritual Shiny Object Syndrome?

Before we call ourselves out, let’s get honest: Why do we do this? What’s behind the constant need to try the next ‘life-changing’ method?

1. Fear of Deep Work

Let’s be real—true spiritual growth isn’t all love and light. It’s uncomfortable. It forces us to face our shadows, limiting beliefs, and emotional wounds. Jumping from one practice to another allows us to stay in a cycle of discovery rather than transformation. It keeps us in the thrill of the new without requiring the patience and discipline of deep inner work.

2. Instant Gratification Culture

We live in a world where we expect everything now. Fast results, quick fixes, and overnight transformations are what we’ve been conditioned to crave. But spirituality isn’t a crash diet—it’s a lifelong commitment. Real breakthroughs don’t happen in a single sound bath or a one-off retreat. They happen in the daily, unglamorous commitment to growth.

3. Marketing Manipulation

But of course —spirituality is big business! There’s always a new book, workshop, certification, or $999 course promising you’ll ‘unlock your higher self.’ And while some of these offerings can be truly valuable, many play into the idea that you need something external to grow, when in reality, the most powerful transformations happen when you integrate what you already know.

4. Spiritual Competitiveness

Though no one likes to admit it, there’s an unspoken competition in spiritual spaces. “Oh, you’re still just meditating? I’m deep in my Akashic records.” This illusion of being ‘more spiritual than thou’ leads people to collect practices like trophies rather than embody their wisdom. Spirituality isn’t about how many techniques you know—it’s about how deeply you integrate what you practice.

The Danger of Superficial Spirituality

Hopping from one trend to another without depth is a form of spiritual bypassing—a way to feel like we’re evolving without actually doing the inner work. Imagine reading ten self-help books but never applying the lessons. That’s what happens when we chase spiritual trends instead of committing to deep, sustained growth.

When spirituality becomes just another form of consumption, it loses its power. True spirituality isn’t about what you practice; it’s about how deeply you commit to it.

How to Avoid Spiritual Shiny Object Syndrome

So how do you make sure you’re not just collecting spiritual practices like Pokémon cards?

Here’s how to cut through the fluff and truly grow:

1. Pick One Core Practice and Stick With It

Instead of bouncing from trend to trend, choose one foundational practice—whether it’s meditation, breathwork, journaling, or energy work—and commit to it consistently for at least three months. Depth, not variety, leads to mastery.

2. Question Your Intentions

Before jumping into a new spiritual method, ask yourself: Am I doing this because I feel genuinely drawn to it, or because it’s trendy? Are you seeking true growth, or are you avoiding the discomfort of staying with one practice long enough to see real results?

3. Integrate What You Learn

If you read a book on manifestation, practice the principles before moving on to the next book. If you take a healing course, apply the techniques before seeking another. Knowledge without integration is just information, not transformation.

4. Beware of Spiritual Consumerism

If every new practice requires you to spend a ton of money, be cautious. True wisdom isn’t found in overpriced courses—it’s found in commitment and practice. Invest in experiences and teachers mindfully, not out of FOMO (fear of missing out).

5. Seek Depth, Not Novelty

Instead of constantly searching for the ‘next big thing,’ dive deeper into what you already know. Revisit the basics. Deepen your meditation. Sit longer with your breath. True spiritual expansion comes from embodying, not accumulating.

Spiritual Growth is Messy, Not Trendy

Here’s the truth: Spiritual growth isn’t Instagrammable. It’s not always peaceful and beautiful. It’s often messy, painful, and frustrating. It requires patience, discipline, and a willingness to sit in discomfort.

There’s no shortcut, no magic trick, no ‘one weird hack’ to enlightenment. It’s about showing up for yourself daily, committing to the long haul, and surrendering to the journey—no matter how unglamorous it looks from the outside.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need to try every method under the sun to be spiritually awakened. You just need to commit—to a practice, to yourself, to the journey. True transformation doesn’t come from constantly seeking the next thing; it comes from staying in the discomfort long enough to grow through it.

So ask yourself—are you truly growing, or just collecting spiritual shiny objects?

✨📖💡Journal Prompts to Reflect on Your Spiritual Growth

  1. What spiritual practices have I started and abandoned quickly? Why?

  2. Do I chase new practices because I believe they’ll ‘fix’ me instantly?

  3. What is one spiritual practice I can commit to for the next three months?

  4. Have I been using spirituality as a way to avoid deep emotional work?

  5. Am I practicing spirituality for growth, or for the appearance of being ‘spiritual’?

These questions can help guide self-reflection and realignment with your soul purpose.

Give them a go and see what insights come up! ✨
