The One Thing That Changed My Life (And Could Change Yours Too)
I’ve always been a “busy” person. I mean, who isn’t, right? The world today is full of distractions. Notifications popping up left and right, new shiny ideas flashing before our eyes, and the ever-tempting pull of something that seems “just as important” as what we were supposed to focus on in the first place.
You know the drill: the “shiny object” syndrome, the constant jumping from one thing to the next, and the overwhelming sense that you’re spinning your wheels, but not really going anywhere.
I was that person. I was constantly hustling, but was I actually accomplishing anything? I had the worst case of procrastination, mixed with a chronic case of “busywork.”
You could say I was a productivity junkie, but in the most unproductive way possible. I’d read countless books, watch endless YouTube videos, and try out every new app or system that promised to solve my time management problems, but nothing seemed to stick.
The Struggle Was Real (But It Doesn’t Have to Be)
Before reading The One Thing, I felt like I was drowning in a sea of responsibilities. I thought that the key to success was doing everything, and doing it well. But here’s the thing—being busy isn’t the same as being productive.
I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have a list a mile long of things I wanted to achieve. But as I ticked off the “tasks,” the sense of accomplishment never seemed to match the effort. I was exhausted, running in circles, constantly “getting stuff done,” but never feeling closer to my big goals. It was like trying to empty an ocean with a teaspoon. I had no clarity about what really mattered, and in my effort to be everywhere at once, I ended up nowhere at all.
Then I came across The One Thing—and everything changed.
The Power of Focus (It’s Not About Doing More)
The premise of The One Thing is simple, but revolutionary. It’s about asking yourself one critical question:
“What’s the one thing I can do, such that by doing it, everything else will be easier or unnecessary?”
Let that sink in for a moment...
If you could distil your daily to-do list down to one thing—just one—what would it be? And why do we constantly feel the need to do everything all at once? It’s like trying to juggle flaming swords while blindfolded. Spoiler alert: You’re going to get burned.
I realized that I wasn’t being productive. I was being “busy.” I was checking off tasks that had no real connection to my long-term goals. I was stuck in the trap of “doing” without purpose, and it was draining me.
Think about it: How often do we spend our days answering emails, putting out fires, or dealing with random requests, only to look up at the end of the day and feel like we’ve accomplished absolutely nothing?
The truth is, we often do the opposite of what’s most important because we’re trying to tackle everything at once. We think that if we just keep moving, we’ll somehow get there. But The One Thing taught me that if we focus on the right thing—the thing that will push us closer to our ultimate goals—everything else starts to fall into place.
The Simple Shift That Changed Everything
After reading the book, I decided to try the concept out. I asked myself: What is the one thing I can do, such that everything else would become easier or unnecessary? For me, the answer was simple: I needed to cut out the noise. I needed to stop focusing on the endless tasks that didn’t actually move the needle forward.
I used to be the person who said “yes” to everything. I wanted to help everyone, take on every project, and learn every new thing that came my way. But by asking myself that one question, I began to prioritize. I started saying “no” to things that weren’t aligned with my true goals. And instead of running on autopilot, I began to ask myself: What is the one thing that, by doing it, will make everything else easier or unnecessary?
It was liberating.
I’m not going to lie; it wasn’t easy at first. The distractions were still there, pulling at my attention. But over time, I began to see how much energy I was wasting on things that didn’t matter. And I felt something I hadn’t felt in years: focus. Real, unshakable focus.
Are You Ready to Focus on The One Thing That Matters?
Now, I want to turn the question to you:
What’s the one thing you can do, such that by doing it, everything else will be easier or unnecessary?
Take a moment to reflect. If you could cut through all the noise, all the distractions, and just focus on one thing that would truly make a difference in your life, what would that be? What’s the one thing that will move you closer to your dreams, your goals, and your vision?
