When You're Having a Bad Day

Updated: Oct 12, 2022

Having a bad day? Have you noticed when you have a bad day that you then end up having a crap night's sleep? Yup, me too.

Yesterday was Murphy's Law day. Everything that could go wrong did. All of which propelled me into a complete flunk and I wondered if I should bother with trying to get life right. Yeah, I know that I should know better but I bet you've been there too, huh?

Then I had an awful dream last night. Or rather, I had a series of dreams that seemed to escalate from a minor mishap into the Rocky Horror Show on steroids.

  • First, I started off slipping down a step in my dream and woke up to find I'd kicked the duvet off.

  • Then I found myself in a dreaded dreamland of a traffic jam. I turned on the radio. David Bowie blasted out a snippet of 'Drive-In Saturday' ('Don't laugh babe, it'll be all right') over and over again, loudly through the speakers. The car shook with the sound. I jumped out the car and sat on the bonnet with my fingers in my ears. Strange that, as it's one of my fave tracks of all time. It's now an ear-worm that's playing on repeat.

  • Next, I'm a passenger in a truck driven by a friend, when suddenly a combine harvester careers towards our vehicle, crashes into us, and splits the truck in two. My friend is no longer there and I'm in shock but alive. Along comes an ex-boss (who I used to think was a complete dick and still do) who shouts, 'Wow, you survived!'

Frankly, I was glad to wake up after that last dream and find it wasn't too soon for my morning cuppa!

Normally, I'd reach towards the stack of books on my bedside table and dive into the rabbit hole of dream dictionaries looking for an answer - what did my dream mean? But I was too exhausted to bother with unravelling the threads of that lot.

The Meaning of Dreams

Instead I sat with my thoughts and feelings. Particularly about the last few days. And came to the conclusion that my subconscious was merely trying to put into pictures and sounds a message for me:

  • Take the next step.

  • Listen, "It'll be all right."

  • No matter what life throws at you, you always survive.

Which made me feel a whole lot better. Perhaps it wasn't so much a nightmare but rather a night-be-aware dream.

What About Bad Days?

It's interesting to look back at your life and realize something about all of the bad days that you've ever experienced:

You've survived every bad day you've ever had.

When you think about it, that's pretty amazing, right? Because, at the time, you weren't sure if you could get out of the quagmire you felt stuck in. But you did. And you will again.

Just because you're having a bad day,
It doesn’t mean you have a bad life.

Dealing with What's Inside Your Mind

Sometimes, finding the answer to the problem of how to turn a bad day into one you can cope with, can be as simple as looking at what's inside your mind.

It may be that your dreams hold a clue or two. Keeping a dream journal and taking a few minutes each day to jot down your dream and think about the underlying message can help you tune into your inner wisdom.

Or it could be as simple as looking at the problems you're facing in a different way - literally.

Try this:

If the problem at the root of your bad day is causing you to feel like crap, then remember that the feeling is simply a thought travelling through your body. One way to gain perspective on what's happening in your life is to move the thought out of your mind, as you'll find the corresponding crappy feeling will follow suit.

So, examine the thought in your mind.

  • Is it a picture or a movie?

  • Once you've found it and discovered if it's a still image or short video, shrink it down to the size of a postage stamp (remember those?)

  • If it's in colour, drain out the colour and make it black and white.

  • If it's a movie then freeze frame it into a still image.

  • Now make the image foggy grey and merge it all together.

  • Next, push it out of your mind and way over to the other side of the country you reside in.

  • Send it way out over yonder until it's barely an atom in size.

  • Leave it there.

Practice this every time an unwanted thought intrudes on your day. It enables you to have a bit more mental bandwidth to deal with stuff, dials down the intrusive thought patterns and calms unhelpful emotions.

All of which can mean you're more likely to get a good night's sleep and feel better the next day!
