How to Boost Your Self-Confidence

Updated: Mar 14, 2022

Does your self-confidence need a boost? Or more like a rocket up the backside to get it moving up towards the sky? Who couldn’t use a little more self-confidence?

The thing that I find interesting with my coaching clients is that they’re always so confident that they lack confidence. Strange, right? ‘Now, are you absolutely certain that you’re confident that you lack self-confidence…’ There’s that flicker of recognition in their eyes as they admit there’s some truth in that. And it’s a starting point for them to tease out exactly what they are and aren’t confident about. You see, nobody is totally confident in all areas.

You’d think that my job would be to work with them on the areas in which they lack confidence. But, not so. I think it’s best to actually build-up the areas in which they do feel confident. And those areas are always the things they feel competent at. Because competence makes confidence. Then I work on the ‘I’m-not-so-sure-about-that’ areas afterwards. This approach raises the necessary courage to tackle those areas, one at a time, from a place of feeling more empowered.

Self-confidence can often be in short supply in parts of your life, but there are many ways you can get it back. When your self-confidence is lacking, take control of the situation. You can accomplish a lot more with self-confidence than you can without, so it’s well worth the effort.

Once you know how to create confidence, you have the ability to empower yourself at will.

Here are some ideas to boost your self-confidence:

Make a short to-do list and accomplish it

Many experts advocate starting with the toughest task first, but if your self-confidence is in the basement, this might not be the best option. Try doing a few of the easier tasks first. Show yourself that you can be productive and successful.

Each time you make a plan and execute it

You’ll feel better about yourself when you do what you say you're going to do. It doesn’t matter whether it’s following through on your plan to go to the gym or to clean out your sock drawer. Make a to-do list and get shit done!

Keep your biggest goals to yourself

Revealing your big goals to others can be enough to make you consider quitting. You’ll be on the receiving end of a lot of negative comments that will make you question yourself and your goals. Don’t be lulled into believing that everyone wants you to succeed. Because many will actually resent the fact that you could be successful and they’ll be the ones who’ll try and pull you down. And nobody needs criticism from frenemies, am I right?

Improve your posture

How you use your body affects how you feel. If you sit and stand tall, you’ll feel more confident. Think about someone you know that always seems to be confident. Notice how they move. Try to mimic their movements and posture. Notice how much more confident you feel. Movies can be a great source of inspiration. Think of a confident movie character and watch how they use their body. Practice standing, sitting, and moving the same way.

There are some great NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) techniques that can speed up your ability to do this. Think Superwoman with her hands on hips ‘I-don’t-take-no-crap-from-anyone’ pose. Body language experts agree that this particular pose automatically makes you feel stronger in yourself. Pose with attitude!

List all your positive qualities

There are plenty of things you can admire about yourself. Even if you have to call a loved one for inspiration, make a list of all your positive qualities. It won’t take long before you feel a little confidence welling up inside of you. Keep the list handy for future reference. Why not phone a few friends and ask them to tell you three things they admire about you. Trust me, they’ll all come up with different qualities that you hadn’t even considered.

List all your past accomplishments

Take a stroll down memory lane and relive your past accomplishments. It’s easy to feel confident when you recall those times you were at your best. Hypnosis is a great tool for retrieving these memories and powering up the feeling of power and elation you felt in the past, and locking those feelings into the present.

Remove those things from your life you’ve been tolerating

We tolerate too much. Get the riff-raff out of your life. This includes people, items you no longer need, clutter in your home, the rattling muffler on your car, and everything else that annoys you. Tell yourself that you deserve better and then make it happen. Any master of the ancient art of feng shui will confirm that this will not only improve the energy in your home, it will also give you an energetic boost within yourself.

Do something you’re good at

What are you good at? Whatever it is, you’ll feel better after doing it. Try to spend time each day doing something that you know you’re great at. Remember, competence makes you feel confident.

Exercise

Exercise provides more than just health benefits. It boosts your willpower, stamina, and self-belief. Exercise also reduces anxiety. All of these things can’t help but boost your self-confidence, too. It’s important to try to get at least a little exercise each day.

No one is able to feel confident 100% of the time, but you can come a lot closer than you think. Even in challenging circumstances, you’re the same person inside. These simple actions are an easy way to find the self-confidence you’ve temporarily misplaced. Self-confidence is always right there, you just have to see it.
