Write with Mindfulness

Why write with mindfulness? It’s very easy in the midst of a difficult time to spend time mulling over past mistakes or feeling worried about a future event that might never happen.


One answer to this negative mind chatter is to ground yourself in the present and write with mindfulness. To do this, settle down to write and concentrate on the here and now.


Write with Mindfulness Exercise:


Breathe slowly and deeply in and out a few times to calm your body, make the out breath slightly longer than the in breath.


Now look around you and begin writing about the environment around you, engaging all of your senses. Get as specific as you can and do not censure the thoughts that come to you.


What can you see? What can you hear? What can you touch? What can you smell? What can you taste?


Write as a stream of consciousness about what you notice, such as:


‘I can see the sun streaming through the window, dust particles are dancing in the air. I notice the colour of the walls that surround it and fingerprints on the window pane. The table in front of me has a bowl of fruit, an apple is bruised. A glass of half-full water acts as a prism to the sunlight, producing a soft rainbow on the table top. I can feel cool air around my face and hands…’


Keep writing about your environment for at least ten minutes. After this time, you’ll notice a sense of calm because you have returned your mind to the present. It’s important to constantly bring your mind into the present, rather than elsewhere on your mental timeline, either the past or present. Life is happening in the now.


Write with Mindfulness Regularly


When you use this write with mindfulness tool regularly, you’ll train your mind to stay in the present, and still those pesky thought trains before they travel into the past or the future.
