NLP Balancing Act

The NLP Balancing Act technique is a great way to rewire your brain to reduce anxiety. It enables you to get in touch with the way emotions can be moved around the body. After all, ‘feelings’ are often just ‘thoughts’ moving through our bodies that cause physical symptoms, such as stress or anxiety. And then you simply change and balance the emotions, so that you feel better.


NLP Balancing Act – The Process


Either sit or stand somewhere quiet where you won’t be disturbed. Breathe in and out, slowly and deeply, three times. Tune into your body and feel the stress or anxiety, concentrate on the memories or thoughts that are at the base of the emotion.


Now mentally move those thoughts and feelings into the palm of your left hand. Feel the intensity of the feelings but concentrate on keeping them locked into the palm of your left hand. Now close your left hand, making a fist around the negative thoughts and feelings.


Now remember a time when you felt confident, happy, calm and relaxed. Add other memories of when you felt similar positive vibes. If you cannot remember specific memories, then imagine wonderful things happening and how great you’d feel.


Stack up the positive feelings together and allow them to mesh together into a ball of bright light. Make the light bigger and brighter, make the positive feelings even more intense, until you’re totally at a peak of positivity.


Allow the positive light ball to roll through your body a few times, all the way around, before sending the ball of positive light to the palm of your right hand. Close your right hand around the ball of positive light to make a fist.


Find the Positive Peak


Hold both hands out to your sides. Allow yourself to become aware of the negative feelings in your left hand and the positive feelings in your right hand. Feel and see the ball of positive feelings in your right hand getting brighter and stronger. Continue until the strength of the positive feelings in your right hand outweighs the strength of the negative feelings in your left hand.


When the strength of positive feelings in your right hand are at a positive peak, open your hands. Slowly bring your hands together, so that they are firmly touching each other. Hold that position whilst you breathe in and out, slowly and deeply, five times.


Practice Makes Perfect


Practice this process over the course of a few weeks. Become aware of internal changes within yourself. How have your thoughts and feelings changed? How has your anxiety lessened? Check in with yourself and note the progress you are making.
