The NLP Whiteboard Technique is a great Neuro Linguistic Programming mind hack. It trains your mind to erase those irksome worries that serve no useful purpose, but leave you feeling agitated.
When your mind dishes up a worry, it also serves up an emotion to go with it. The worry and the emotion are locked in together. A worry flashes into your mind, even for just a few seconds, and the sense of disquiet can linger on without you connecting the two parts of the worry (recall and corresponding emotion).
Anything can cause a worry to rise up, as your mind constantly assesses what is happening around you, against what has happened in the past. This process is known as ‘pattern matching.’ It’s a case of ‘That has just happened and the nearest memory stored is this one – let me remind you about it.’
Use the NLP Whiteboard Technique to instruct your mind to wipe out annoying thoughts. We’re not discussing thoughts of major traumatic events here. Just those niggles that you want to clear from your mind, so you can clearly focus on the task in front of you.
But remember – your mind is resistant, so you need to be persistent – and repeat this NLP Whiteboard Technique procedure regularly, until your mind gives up with its useless banter.
The NLP Whiteboard Technique:
1. As an unwanted thought pops up, become aware of its actual position as far as your mind is concerned. Is it on the left, on the right or somewhere in the middle? Ascertain exactly where it is then ‘freeze’ it, shrink it down and continue to ‘hold’ the thought where it is.
2. Next to it bring in an image of a large whiteboard and ‘freeze’ the whiteboard in place.
3. Move the unwanted thought onto the middle of the whiteboard.
4. Imagine you’re holding a whiteboard eraser in your hand, and rub the worrying thought off the whiteboard.
5. Once you have practised this a few times, speed up the process as fast as you can, so that the technique takes seconds. Your mind learns best when it's instructed fast!
6. If you are familiar with Meridian Tapping techniques, such as EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) or TFT (Thought Field Therapy), you might like to experiment by tapping throughout this exercise. Tapping helps dispel the underlying emotion associated with the memory.
